EP 142: 3 Signs It May Be Time To Hire A Coach

Hiring a coach was and is still one of the best investments that I have ever made in my business. I think I’ve told the story before about how way back when I was selling jewelry, the first big investment that I made. I think it was $150 at the time and was a one hour session with someone that I admired who also had experience in the handmade jewelry space.

At that time I was so incredibly broke so spending $150 to talk to someone about business for an hour seemed absolutely insane, but I knew that I needed help and I knew that searching Google for hours was no longer working. So I took the leap of faith and I spent the money. And from that one hour session my business was changed in the best way possible. I learned more about how to implement my story into the brand I was building. She gave me a super simple strategy for pitching my products to local shops. 

It was well worth the investment that I made and some of those same strategies I have been able to utilize over and over again over the past 8 years. But that investment also made me a believer in the importance of investing in your business and also paying for help when you need it. Since hiring my first coach I have gone to hire others pretty much in every major step I have taken in my business. When I wanted to learn more about getting new clients, I hired a coach. When I felt like something was missing with my marketing strategy, I hired a coach!

While these investments are now definitely a lot more than the $150 I paid to my very first coach, they have been so worth it because it has helped to accelerate my growth in ways that would have taken me YEARS had I just decided to keep googling things or just doing what I saw was working for everyone else.

So this week I wanted to talk about how you know that you are ready to hire a coach. And I’m not just talking about this because I am a coach, although I would be honored to work with you. But because I truly see the value in getting strategic help from someone who is currently where you want to be and who can provide you with guidance based on your specific areas of need!


Back when I hired my marketing coach, one of the things that really pushed me into making the investment was I felt stuck and overwhelmed. No matter how much I was googling or how much I tried different strategies, nothing seemed to be working how I had hoped and I couldn’t figure out where that disconnection was happening. I also knew that by literally just throwing strategies at the wall and waiting to see what would stick, that I was wasting a ton of time that could have been spent on other parts of my business or on effective marketing strategies.

There comes a point in your business where Google no longer works or just seeing what everyone else is doing no longer works. One of the great benefits of hiring a coach is that you can get advice and strategies that are tailored to your specific situation. While Im a huge fan of google and youtube, often a lot of the information that people share is more “one sized fits all.” but when you’re working with a coach, you can get the feedback and strategies that are going to be tailored to your specific needs.


A few years ago when I really decided that coaching was going to be my bread and butter, I didn’t know how to go from offering these one-off hour sessions to creating packages that would really help me to work with more clients and also make more money as well. I was getting clients pretty consistently but I didn’t know how to make that shift from working with them for a longer period of time and also how to effectively charge for those longer packages as well.

So I hired a coach to help me walk through the process of getting me to the next level. Each new level you achieve in your business requires something different from you. A different mindset, a different skill set. And if you’ve never been at that next level before then you don’t necessarily know what is required of you in order to get there and also thrive there! So a great coach can really lay out a plan for what you need to do and what you need to continue doing in order to get to that new level in your business and also maintain it.

The same strategies that you are using in level one wont work when you’re in level three. So its important to always be a student of your craft or of your industry and get some help to make sure that you’re on the right path.


I’m what you would call an ideas person. There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t have this incredible new idea that I immediately want to act on. That’s great and I truly believe that there is a special place in heaven for people like us but when it comes to business, that can sometimes cause a distraction.

See when you have all of these ideas for what you want to do in your business, if you’re not careful you’ll find yourself touching on all of these different ideas but never actually seeing any of them through to completion. And when that happens, the vision that you have for yourself or that you have for life gets muffled. And when you don’t have a clear vision, you cant create a clear plan and you end up a year down the line with no real progress made. Ask me how I know?!

It isn’t a coaches job to sit there and tell you what you should be doing. But it is a coaches job to help you to sort through some of those big ideas that you have, help you decide which one you want to focus on and then guide you through making a solid plan of action.

So if you have all of these ideas or if you’re just unsure what path to take and its starting to cloud your vision for your life or business, then it may be time to hire a coach who can help you to sort all the way through it.

Those are the three solid signs that it may be time for you to hire a coach. But I wanted to mention this one big mental shift that needs to take place before you dive in. You need to first, shift your thinking from this is just another expense to this is an investment. When you view hiring a coach or taking a course as simply an expense, you go into the program already with the thinking that this costs too much money or you’re never going to see that money again. It throws your whole energy off and that will definitely affect how you show up in the program. But when you think of hiring a coach as an investment, you walk into it knowing that the goal at the very least is to make back what you put in. So you go into the program with a better attitude and you’re more likely to show up and do the work!

Unless you’re hiring a mindset coach or a coach who includes mindset work in their program, you need to have done that work before you spend your money.

You also need to know that the coach you hire is not a genie or a miracle worker. I think there is a big misconception and also a big mindset problem that when you pay for a coach, they are working for you and that simply handing over your debit card is enough to begin seeing real results. But that’s not how that works! When you hire a coach they are working with you. Meaning, you need to be just as much involved in the process as they are. You need to show up for the calls, you need to do the work, you need to be willing to let down your guard and ask those vulnerable questions, you need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable and implement what you coach is trying to tell you to do. If not, you’ll just waste your money and that’s the last thing I want for you.

So again, that mental shift from expense to investment is absolutely necessary and you also need to be willing to do the work. And not to keep going on a tangent but if you’re not willing to do the work then you need to dig deeper and figure out why. 9 times out of 10 it isn’t because of lack of time because you make time for the things that are important to you. So is it because you don’t really believe that your goals are achievable. Is it a fear of failure? Get deep to the root of why you’re not showing up for yourself.
